What they do
Privacy without closing the room in
A curtain is either open or shut. A shutter lets you tilt the louvres and keep the light while losing the view in from the street, which is the whole reason they suit London: front rooms sit close to the pavement, and the alternative is net curtains or living with the blinds down. On a sash window they also solve the awkward middle ground, because the lower panel can be closed against the street while the top stays open to the sky.

Common questions
Will shutters fit a bay window?
Yes, and bays are where made-to-measure earns its money. A bay has angled returns, and the reveals are rarely the same depth all the way round, so panels have to be set out to the actual geometry. We take the sizes at survey and build to what is there rather than to what the plan says.
Can I have them on a sash window without losing the sash?
Yes. The shutters sit inside the reveal and the sash still runs behind them. Tier-on-tier panels are the usual arrangement on a sash, because they let you close the bottom half against the street and leave the top open.
Do I need permission to fit shutters?
Interior shutters are inside the building, so on most properties they do not need consent. On a listed building the interior is covered by listed building consent, and internal joinery can be part of what is protected. If your property is listed, check with your conservation officer before ordering.
