In traditional windows the glazing bars are rigid and separate the panes of glass.
What they're made of
Timber, glazing and finishes
Timber
Accoya, oak and sapele. Accoya is a modified timber that carries a 50-year manufacturer's warranty against rot above ground — dimensionally stable, so painted finishes last.
Glazing
Slim-line double glazing, 12–16mm, that sits within a period glazing bar — not the thick units that force a modern-looking bar. Single glazing where a listed building calls for it.
Finishes
Factory-sprayed or hand-painted, in any RAL or heritage colour. Repaintable in place, so the window ages with the house rather than against it.

Common questions
The things people ask before they call us
Do I need planning permission to replace my windows?
Often, yes. Many London conservation areas carry an Article 4 direction, which removes the right to replace windows without applying to the council. Flats never have that right. We'll tell you what applies to your property before anything is made.
Can I have double glazing in a conservation area?
Usually. Slim-line units of 12–16mm sit within a period glazing bar, where a standard 24–28mm unit would force a much thicker, modern-looking bar. Where a listed building calls for it, we also make single-glazed sashes. The final decision rests with your conservation officer.
Will my new windows look like the originals?
That's the point. We copy the profiles from your existing sashes, bed the glass in genuine linseed oil putty, and make true through glazing bars that divide separate panes — not bars bonded to the face of one sheet of glass.
