The difference

Most heritage windows only look the part.

The industry bonds timber strips to a single sheet of glass, then shapes the beading to imitate putty. It passes at a glance. It doesn't pass up close.

Two sash windows compared: on the left, applied glazing bars bonded to a single continuous sheet of glass; on the right, true glazing bars dividing six separate panes, each bedded in linseed oil putty

Applied glazing bars

One continuous sheet of glass. The bars are bonded on — the panes aren't real.

True divided lights

Six separate panes, each bedded in linseed oil putty.

Why it matters

  • Councils accept it

Conservation guidance favours traditional putty and treats applied timber beads as unwelcome — often the difference between consent and refusal.

  • It can be repaired

Putty is renewed with a knife and a brush. A bonded bead cannot be repaired — when it lifts, it is replaced.

  • It looks right

A real bar casts a real shadow and breaks the reflection. Applied bars leave a flat, mirrored sheet — the reason new windows so often look wrong on an old house.
